Description
Winter
High on the crests of the mountains old,
Down in the valley's depth,
Far from the land of ice and cold
The wintry blasts have crept,
Stripped are the limbs of the birch and pine,
Bare is the mighty oak,
And they sigh and groan and all decline
The winter's downy cloak.
With shrieks and yells of fiendish glee
The tempests go away,
And the earth is tired from the jubilee
That lasted all the day
Then faintly is heard as the sun sinks low
In a sea of replendent light
The whispered sigh of day's overthrow
By the shades of dusky night.
Out on the deep where the storm clouds frown,
Out where the white caps play,
The crystal flakes fall gently down,
And the dusk rules o'er the day.
Down on the rocks where the mad waves dash,
And on the tossing sea,
Ever they come thru the ebon night
And blanket the rolling lea.
