History

The Iowa Heritage Digital Collections (IHDC) was envisioned as an online collection of Iowa history and culture created by bringing together documents, images, maps, finding aids, interpretive and educational materials, and other media from collections held by a wide range of organizations throughout Iowa. In 2003 the State Library of Iowa, and the libraries of the University of Iowa and Iowa State University joined forces to create this Web site.

Staff at the University of Iowa Libraries designed the Web site, installed the software and provided training to organizations which wanted to add digital collections dealing with Iowa history and culture to the IHDC. A wide variety of organizations participate in the collaboration.

In 2009 the State Library of Iowa agreed to take over the day-to-day management of the site. New collections are now being added to the IHDC. Institutions who might be interested in contributing can click here for more information.
