IT CANNOT WAS
It is a long time to come, I remember it well,
By the side of a poor house a maiden did dwell;
She lived with her parents, her life was serene,
Her age was bright red and her hair was nineteen.
This maid had a lover who nearby did dwell,
A cross-legged ruffian and bow-eyed as well.
He said, "Let us fly by the light of yon star,
For you are the eye of my apple, you are."
"Oh, no," said the maid, who thought it unwise,
"For father would scratch out your nails with his eyes.
"So then you've deceived me," the villian, he said,
And he pulled out his knife and killed her quite dead.
Just then her old father appears, it appears,
When he saw the sight, there were eyes in his tears.
He knelt down beside her, her pale face he kissed,
Then he rushed with his nose at the murderer's fist.
He pointed him at a horse pistol, raised from a colt,
He told the murderer to get a move on and bolt.
He said, "If I stay here I shall die here it's true,
So I guess I shall fly," and he flew up the flue.
Editor's Note.—This poem, if it may be called that, was found by the
editor under his door one morning. For that reason it is published anonymously and no one can stop you from claiming it as your own if you want to. Ours it isn't! It is said to be very old and hence has added value.
