A swift, soaring group of gridiron flying saucers exploded in
spectacular fashion in the second
half for St. Ambrose college Sunday afternoon to provide the Bees
with a cherished 30-13 pigskin
eclipse of the Loras Duhawks.
Flashiest comet in the Blue and
White constellation was scatback
Pat Carroll who brought the 8,500
shirt-sleeved fans in the Municipal stadium to their feet with a
sizzling 90-yard touchdown dash
in the final quarter.
Jack Melligan and Tom Greenan
also left trails of fire in their wake
with sensational sr# ints. Melligan
broke thru for a 57-yard dash to
the end zone in the fourth quarter
and Greenan scampered 68-yards
to the one-yard line of Loras in
the second stanza. Lee Matera and
Norb Schulz also hammered at the
Loras defense with notable results.
PULLS TRUMP CARD.
The sensational thrusts of Carroll and Melligan shattered what
had previously been a furious defensive battle between two stub-
bora forward walls. Loras had
dominated the play of the first.
half of the game and left the field
at halftime with a 7-6 advantage.
But Coach Moon Mullins
showed his trump card in the second half as Carroll took over the
lion's share of the ball carrying
work. Carroll had toted the
leather only twice in the first hall',
once on a plunge that netted the
first Bee touchdown.

midway point of the third quarto/.
Carroll went to work and in three
successive running tries, moved
the ball from the Loras 40-yar<-
line to the Loras one. Melligan
took it over from there with four
minutes left in the third period.
St. Ambrose went on the move
again after regaining possession of
the ball and with Schulz clicking
off two successive first downs,
penetrated to the Loras five. Three
line plays failed to make any
negligible gain and on the first
play of the fourth quarter, Tim
Madden split the uprights with a
field goal from the 15-yard line.
It gave the Bees a 16-7 lead and
seemed to be the signal for the big
Ambrose blasts*
STRIKE SUDDENLY.
Less than three minutes later,
St. Ambrose took over the ball on
its own 10-yard line after Loras
had punted out of bounds. On the
first play, quarterback Matera
started a boot leg play around
right end. At the line of scrimmage Matera spun a lateral to
Carroll who turned on the steam.
The Texas flash slashed his way
to the 35-yard line where he broke
into the clear and rambled the rest
of the 90 yards to score.
Three minutes later, Melligan
picked his way over the Loras
right tackle and then outran the
Duhawk secondary for a 57-yard

Carroll's day's work amounted
to 145 yards in 10 tries. Melligan
gained 72 yards in eight attempts.
John Rohans* left handed passing loomed as the big weapon for
Loras early in the game. Rohans
pitched a neat 20-yard aerial to Ed
Uvodich in the end zone just five
and a half minutes after the game
got under way. Loras did not
score again until the final minute
of the game when Rohans went
over on a quarterback sneak.
Ambrose found the going tough
thru the first quarter when suddenly with barely over a minute
remaining in the quarter, Tom
Greenan bolted over tackle and
1 streaked 68 yards to the one-yard
line. After Melligan and Greenan
had failed to gain, Carroll punched
over the touchdown.
The bruising line-play came into
its own in the second canto with
Loras getting the upper hand as
the Duhawks drove to the Ambrose two-yard line in the last
minute of the half.
The gold-clad team hit the end
zone on second down but an offsides penalty nullified the score
and moved the ball back to the
seven. That proved to be the
boost the Bees needed for the line
held secure at that point.
The victory was the 15th in succession for St. Ambrose, their fifth
this season. It was the final game
for St. Ambrose assistant coach,
Matt Starcevich, who reports for
active duty in the navy.
