St. Ambrose Triumphs Over Stubborn Wesleyan, 18-6

Davenpcrt—St. Ambrose found
the going rough as they used
breaks to subdue a scrappy Iowa
Wesleyan eleven at the Municipal stadium here Thursday night,
18-6. It was the first Iowa conference game of the season.
) St. Ambrose had to go all out
to beat the fighting Tigers and
j the first team played all but a
quarter of the tilt. It took Coach
Moon Mullins power-laden aggregation 20 minutes before they" scored their first touchdown and they
were lucky to get the marker.
Blocked Punt
In the second quarter Bob Bog-
dcnas, who did a superb job running, passing and punting, booted
from his own 34 to the St. Ambrose 32. Dick Zielinski returned
to the IWC 45 but a holding penalty was called on the Bees and
the ball was moved up to the 39.
Bogdonas dropped back to punt
again and a St. Ambrose lineman
rushed through to block it. End
Paul Godesabois scooped up the)
ball on the 30 and dashed over-
the goal for the six pointer. Larry
Ketza's attempted conversion was
blocked.
The Bees had various chances
to score in the first quarter but
the Wesleyan line stopped them
repeatedly. Early in the game St.
Ambrose recovered a Tiger fum-|
ble on the IWC 32. Pat Carroll|
gained to the 25 and Lee Matera
fired a pass to Ed Sheck on the
17 for a first down. A Matera
pass into the end zone fell incomplete. Zielinski was stopped
hard by Don Preihs after a three
yard advance. Two more Matera
passes were incomplete and the
Tigers took over. With Jim Mor-
ita, Bob Bogdonas and Don Kron-
berg carrying the ball Wesleyan
gained to the 25 where the Bees.,
recovered another IWC fumble:
An offside penalty on Wesleyan
moved the sphere to the 20 but
Preihs intercepted Matera Is pass
on the next play to end the threat
once more.
After several plays didn't net
the Tigers much yardage Bogdonas punted to the Bee 32. St.
Ambrose gained to the 27 but an
incomplete pass on fourth down
gave Wesleyan the b*ll. Then
came the series of events which
gave the Bees their first touchdown.
Several minutes after thai
St. Ambrose started their second touchdown drive from their
14. Don Melligan carried three
straight times and gained to
the 25. Des Jarden was injured
the third time Melligan carried and had to leave the game.
Matera picked up a first and
ten on the 29 and Jack Melligan gained to the 31. Carroll
toted the pigskin 69 yards down
the sideline for a tally on the
next play. A Wesleyan man
made a desperate lunge at Carroll on the Tiger 30 but couldn't
stop him. Ketza's place kick
bounced off the goal post.
Wesleyan had a wonderful chance
to score late in the second quarter when a Bee fumble was recovered on the St. Ambrose 20.
Bogdonas blasted his way to the
15 but a five yard pushing penalty nullified the gain and moved
the ball back to the 25, Morita
gained a yard and a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty on
St. Ambrose made it second down
on the nine.
Fumble on Two
Bogd-onas got loose and was running hard towards the goal when
he was hit on the two. The ball
squirted out of his arms and a
St. Ambrose man pounced on it
on the five.
Wesleyan had the Bees pushed
back to the one yard line as the
second half ended.
Wesleyan kicked off and St.
Ambrose marched 70 yards to
paydirt. A fourth down aerial from
Tom Greenan to Sheck covered
30 yards and gave the winners a
first down on the 12. Zielinski
bulled to the seven, Bob Bevenour
plowed his way to the three and
Greenan circled his own right end
for the six points. Again the attempted conversion was not goodj
Morita, who displayed plenty of
drive during the hard-fought encounter returned the kick-off 17

started a drive that fizzled out
on the Bee 21. Two short over the
line passes from "Red" Merritt to
Godfrey were good for 13 and 10
yards each, the last one going
to the St. Ambrose 26. A five
yard pushing penalty gave Coach
E. R. Jarvis' crew a first and five
on the 21. Merritt was thrown »for
losses of five, eight and nine yards
in the next three plays as he was
caught behind the line of scrimmage trying to pass. Al Vander-
Merkt then punted to the Bee ten.
After another exchange of punts
with the game in the fourth quarter and St. Ambrose deep in then-
own territory Don Page intercepted a Bee pass on the St. Ambrose ten to set up Wesleyan's
only touchdown.
