Bees Reserve
Power Defeats
Simpson 14-6
The St. Ambrose Bees' reserve
power defeated the Simpson Red-
men 14 to 6 in an Iowa conference
game played on the high school
athletic field Friday night. It was
the first loop loss for Simpson, last
year's champions.
I Statistics, however, gave the
, Redmen the edge in all departments except in passing yardage.
Simpson made 18 first downs to
12 by St. Ambrose and gained 253
yards by rushing to 233 by the
Bees.
After a relatively quiet first
quarter, Simpson made its first
threat early in the second period
when Jim Mathew, junior fullback, ran the ball to the St. Ambrose 11 yard line from the 31.
Freshman back Ed Weeks picked
up 2 yards, Larry Parr failed to
'gain in a plunge, two passes were
incomplete and Simpson lost the
J ball on downs on the St. Ambrose
9 yard stripe.

ran it up to the Simpson 45 yard
line. A series of downs moved
Simpson down to *the 1 inch line
and the ball was finally pushed
over by Parr in a line plunge.
The^re was a fumble in the try for
extra point and the score stood at
7 to 6 in favor of St. Ambrose.
Right after the kick-off for the
second half, St. Ambrose started
what proved to be another unsuccessful attempt to score. The Bees
worked the ball from their own
20 yard line to Simpson's 10 before they finally lost possession
of the ball.
Simpson Threatens
Another Simpson tnreat came
later in the third quarter when a
St. Ambrose kick went out of
bounds on their own 36 and the
Redmen moved down to the Bees'
20 yard line before the* Simpson
eleven again lost the ball.
At the beginning of the final
quarter St. Ambrose was in possession of the ball on its own 26 yard
line. The Bees' halfback, Tom
Greenan, lost a yard on the first
try, but on the second play Carroll broke loose and ran the remaining distance for the Bees'
second touchdown. Madden kicked
the St. Ambrose extra point which
gave the visitors an eight point
lead over the Redmen.
The final minutes of the game
found St. Ambrose again deep in
Simpson territory, but the Redmen
line held, and the Bees failed to
score from the Simpson 14-yard
line. The game ended before the
Bees could drive the ball over.
The 14 to 6 defeat for Simpson
makes the second Iowa conference
win for St. Ambrose so far this
season, and the first loop loss for
the Redmen.
Simpson will play Iowa Wesleyan at Mt. Pleasant next Thursday,
Oct. 5.
