DUBUQUE, IA.—Alert St. Ambrose turned two fumbles and two
pass interceptions into touchdowns to blast Loras, 27-6, here
Friday.
Fortune smiled on the Bees in
their thirteenth game of the
season, the first football play-off
championship in the 27-year history of the Iowa conference.
Outdowned.
Outdowned, 16-9, and outgained
on the ground, 241-74, the Bees
didn't let little things like the
"13" jinx or statistics bother
them.
The Bees' Paul Godesabois
grabbed a loose Loras pitch-
out in the first quarter and
St. Ambrose scored two plays
later on a 46-yard pass play.
Tim Madden's kick provided
enough of a margin ior the
Bees' twelfth victory of the
season.
In the second quarter a Loras
pass by Jack Rohan was deflected
into center Bruno Mikrut's hands
and he rambled 70 yards for the
second Bee touchdown.
Jack Melligan xah 39 yards
with an intercepted pass for the
third St. Ambrose score in the
third quarter and a fumble recovery and a 32-yard pass provided the Bees with their fourth
quarter marker.
Five Threats.
Five times in the first half
Loras came storming toward the
touchdown gate and all the
thrusts but one were repulsed by
the bruising Bee defenders.
The one Duhawk scoring
sortie resulted from a 61-
yard march $y2 minutes before halftlme. Freshman Bob
Burgmeier brought a lusty
cheer from the 4,500 assembled
at the Kock Bowl by rounding end from a yard out to cap
the drive.
Loras was supposed to be "up"
for this one. St. Ambrose was
supposed to be crippled up and
tired after its lon£ season.
But the opportunists from Davenport took every break that
came their way to rack up their
third straight over the Duhawks,
the second this season. The
triumph gave St. Ambrose a 12-
1 season mark.
It also gave the Bees, who
beat the Duhawks, 30-13, earlier
this year, a 16-6-3 mark in competition with Loras and was
their twenty-second victory in
their last 23 games.
Bold Start,
St. Ambrose had a 16*game
winning streak stopped by St.
Norbert Oct. 15, and it looked
like Loras was going to snap the
Bees' new string at five the way
the Duhawks started.
They pushed the Bees all over
the lot between the 20-yard lines.
But when Loras punched to the
Bee 20 a massive picket line rose
up to flag the Duhawks.
Earl Riley of Des Moines
was right in the center of that
rugged line.
The teams jabbed and probed
through the first period until the
Bees' Godesabois pounced on a
bounding Loras pitch out thrown
by Dick Zaleski.
Pass Gets 46.
The ball was on the St. Ambrose 44 and after Pat Carroll
tore off 10 yards Tom Greenan
passed 46 to Dick Les for the
score.
Greenan's pass was a high
floater that Les caught over his
shoulder as he stepped across the
goal with a Loras defender hanging on.
Godeslabois and Forbes close in on
Greenan hits Dick Les for forty-six yards and a TD.
Then two Loras drives were
repulsed, the second when Leo
Kilfoy of St. Ambrose grabbed
Jack Rohan's bobble in the air
and ran 7 yards to the Bees'
