ST. BENEDICT 6
The first encounter on the gridiron for the
Bees this season was certainly a good forecast of what was to come ... an uphill fight
. . . and victory! A young and inexperienced
St. Ambrose eleven took the field against the
highly favored St. Benedict team . . . fought
in the traditional St. Ambrose spirit . . . and
emerged the victor.
Sophomore halfback Dick Allison was a
standout on offense for the Bees, outgaining
the entire St. Benedict team on the ground
. . . 125 yards to 64. Touchdowns by Gene
Walton and Joe Jones . . . fine passing by
Bob Webb, who was playing his first game at
quarterback . . . and an outstanding team effort proved enough to capture our first victory.

With the feel of victory still warm in their
veins, the Bees faced one of their most rugged
opponents in the next I contest — the Lewis
College Fliers. According to statistics the Bees
were outplayed . . . but not so according to
the score at the final gun. Showing marked
inexperience, but at the same time driving
determination and dogged defense, the St.
Ambrose aggregation managed a 7-6 half-
time lead.
Holding Lewis to a two-point safety . . .
four downs inside the five yard line . . . and
scoring another touchdown in the closing minutes, gave the Bees their second victory, well
deserved for a fine team effort.
Doc Nestor (12) makes short gain against Lewis,
