Coach Leo Kilfoy,
Assistant Football Coach
Coach L. G. Friedrichs came to Saint Ambrose directly from high school
coaching, beginning his career after graduation from the University of Oklahoma. His first years of coaching were spent at Marquette High School, Milwaukee, where he won the conference championship.
In 1946, he became head football coach at Holy Cross in New Orleans. He
guided his teams to 19 wins in twenty three starts during his four year skein.
In 1950 he transferred to Saint Louis University High School, winning titles
in both basketball and football.
At Creighton Prep in Omaha he won 26 games, dropping only 8, and going
undefeated in his last two seasons. In these two seasons, 1953 and 1954, his
teams won 18, lost none, and were chosen state and city champions. He was
chosen Coach of the Year in the Omaha area in 1953 and Catholic High School
Coach of the Year in 1954.
In his first year at Saint Ambrose, Coach Friedrichs had to mold inexperienced boys, mostly sophomores and freshmen, into a team . . . this group
contained only six lettermen from the previous year — four sophomores, one
junior, and one senior.
Coach Friedrichs produced a fine team. But it wasn't just a team; it was
a winning team; it was a winning team that missed being undefeated by the
slim margin of a few bad breaks.
