the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
The St. Ambrose chapter of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliate was
first formed in March of 1951, although the Club did not begin to really function
until September of 1951. The intervening months were taken up with drawing up a
charter and constitution and membership drive.
In November they made a trip to Peoria, Illinois and toured Hiram Walker
Distilleries, where they had dinner, Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery, and Northern Regional
Laboratories, where penicillin was developed on the commercial scale. In December
some of the members attended an invitational American Chemical Society discussion
at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. In February a trip was made out to
the Aluminum Company of America's plant in Bettendorf, Iowa. Here they made
a tour of the laboratory and were shown how the "Quantometer" worked. This
is a machine for immediate analysis of the aluminum metal that they use. In March
the society toured the laboratory facilities at the Rock Island Arsenal and in April
a trip was made up to Clinton, Iowa where they were shown through the plants of
DuPont Cellophane and Clinton Food Products. The final trip in May was to Peoria,
Illinois again to tour for the entire day through the plant of Commercial Solvents, Inc.

The Executive Committee was composed of these three officers.
The society had a number of guest lecturers during the year. Mr. Lee
Morehead of Rock Island Arsenal Analytical Laboratory spoke to the society
of the spectrograph and spectroscope and their applications and uses in
analytical chemistry. Mr. Dwight Sommers of Mercy Hospital spoke to the
group in December on clinical chemistry and different clinical tests that are
routine in the hospital laboratory. Mr. Cook of Bituminous Casualty Company
in Rock Island, Illinois spoke to the group in the first part of January on the
legal aspects of chemistry. In February the society heard about rubber
chemistry and plastics from Mr. Robert Shaw of the Rock Island Arsenal
Laboratory. In March Dr. Fetzer of Clinton Food Products addressed the
group. Election of officers was held at the April meeting.
