Loras, the oldest and most heated rival of the
Bees, provided one of the more pleasant chapters
in the '54 St. Ambrose football story. With ah
unyielding defense and an offense sparked by
Ken Filar and Mitch Ware, the Bees drubbed
the DuHawks 26-0.
The game was close for a half as Ken Filar's
6 yard dash provided a slim 6-0 lead. But it was
a different story after intermission. Filar once
again scored, this time from 5 yards out, to start
the offense rolling. Ware handled the point-
making from that time on with long scoring runs
of 45 and 37 yards.
This victory was especially welcome because it
returned the Victory Bell to St Ambrose. This
trophy is awarded each year to the winner of the
regular season game between the Bees and the
DuHawks, and this was the first such triumph
for St. Ambrose since the 1950 season.

For many years St Ambrose and Loras have
been the strongest of rivals. As if anything were
needed to add to the rivalry, the Victory Bell
was introduced after World War II as an award
to each year's winner. The bell itself was taken
from a captured Japanese warship. It has rapidly
become a symbol of supremacy in one of the
nation's best small college rivalries.
