Lewis College had everything its own way as
the Fliers soundly whipped our Bees 46-7 in a
game played at Lockport, Illinois. It was one
of those days when the team could seemingly
do nothing right, and the opponents nothing
wrong.
Ambrose moved the ball fairly well in the
early stages of the game, but the attack always
seemed to bog down near the goal line. However, as the game wore on and the score mounted,
demoralization set in.
If the Bees can be said to have had a hero on
such a day, Hugh Jacobsen gets the nomination.
He did most of the profitable ball carrying, and
plunged for the touchdown, the sole factor which
prevented an even more humiliating shutout
Western Illinois Teachers of Macomb barely
beat St Ambrose, 26-18, in the inaugural game
for the Bees. The accent was on offense throughout, and in the final analysis, the efforts of Ken
Filar and his cohorts could not quite match the
high-flying Teachers' attack which was geared
around talented Don Lashmet
Two first half touchdowns by Ken Filar offset
a similar output from the Macomb forces, but
the Bees left the field trailing 13-12, due to an
inability to make an extra point Filar's scoring
runs covered distances of 4 and 11 yards.
St. Ambrose regained the lead momentarily
as a two yard plunge by Jack Brookhart capped
a third period drive. But the visiting Leathernecks knuckled down and pushed over a pair
of scores to definitely settle the outcome.
Jack Abbott spearheaded a late surge, as he
completed nine out of eleven passes in moving
the ball nearly the length of the field. But with
only twenty seconds remaining, and the ball on
the Teachers' four, the attack sputtered and Macomb easily stalled out the remaining moments
to win.
A good stiff-arm gives Brookhart room to ramble, at
least for a moment, against the Fliers.
