Ninth President Retires A great figure casts a long shadow - such is the person of our Rt. Rev. Msgr. William J. Collins, ninth presi- lent of Saint Ambrose College, Present Ambrosians will remember im as they appreciate the com- orts of the College Center and the residence halls. Msgr. Collins was born near Mil- srsburg, Iowa, and moved to Dav- nport in 1917. He is a graduate of St. Ambrose College. His M.A. was earned at Catholic University of America. He continued his study of political science and was awarded PH.D. by the State University of Iowa. His priestly life was spent studying or teaching at St. Ambrose, prior to his elevation to the presi- ency of the College on February 5, 1956, he served as Chairman of the Division of Social Sciences and of the Department of Economics and business Administration. Msgr. Collins devoted much time to national and regional professional organizations. They included the american Economic Association, the american Farm Economic Associa- on, the Catholic Economic Asso- iation, the Industrial Relations Re- earch Association, the American political Science Association, and the National Education Association. He was also active in the American Legion, Post 26 and the Quad-City council of World Affairs. Msgr. Collins has contributed to THE CATHOLIC RURAL LIFE, THE CATHOLIC MESSENGER, THE IOWA JOURNAL OF HISTORY AND POLITICS and our ACORNS : OAKS. September 10, 1963, Msgr. Coins was retired from his post as president and was appointed resi- ent chaplain at the Kahl Home by Bishop Hayes. With his new appointment Msgr. Collins termin- ted forty-two years of continuous participation on the Campus, as a student, a professor, and a President. 17
