Description

Bishop Hayes Presides As President of the Corporation governing Saint Ambrose College, His Excellency Ralph L. Hayes, Bishop of Davenport, has directed the growth of the College with wisdom and a steadfast hand by worthy appointees to the administrative offices and to the Corporation. Bishop Hayes was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvaina. He attended public grade school near his home and received his high school and college training at Holy Ghost College. Then he left for Rome and the University of the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith. It was while he was studying in Rome that he had an audience with Pope St. Pius X. On September 18, 1909, he was ordained in Rome and celebrated his first Mass at the Church of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The first assignment of the newly ordained Father Hayes was as assistant to the pastor of the Holy Rosary Church in Pittsburgh. On June 23, 1933, he was appointed Bishop of Helena, Montana and in September of the same year he consecrated St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh. In 1935, he was appointed Rector of the North American College in Rome. Then, in 1944 he was appointed Bishop of Davenport and was enthorned on January 11, 1945. During his fifty-five years as a priest he has met the world's people. He has held many responsible positions, such as the Diocesan Mission Band, Superintendent of Schools, Censor Liborum, Pastor, Seminary Rector, Assistant Moderator of Theological Conferences, Secretary of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Synodal and Pro- Synodal Examiner and Bishop. The Ambrosian Family is proud of its Bishop who has given so generously of his life to his Church, his Diocese, and his College. 16
