Description

Resumption: Publication was resumed in 1940 and we quote the Foreword: "It is the purpose of this yearbook to cultivate the cooperation of all students and journalists especially, in lending their talents to the composition of our college newspaper and magazine. OAKS represents a new addition to our ensemble of publications, and it intends, with the fresh enthusiasm which an innovation elicits, to elevate the standard and to facilitate the editing of campus publications. With its revival the annual introduces a form of college journalism with which students and student writers have become unfamiliar during the past seventeen years. Enlivened interest and appreciation will, we hope, effect a literary renaissance at St. Ambrose College." Assistant Editor, now Dr. J. F. Shekleton, Cleveland Heights, recalls, "The staff undertook what later turned out to be a fantastic responsibility" . . . then adds: "There was very, very little order to our procedure . . . There was a furious scramble to line up the necessary commercial help and, without the benefit of any im- ST. AMBROSE Under thy name, under thy patronage, We live and study out our college days. And now we raise one migthy voice to give Thy blessed name a sounding ring of praise. Saint Ambrose! Let the heavens bear our cry To thee, and past thee, to His lofty throne. Saint Ambrose! Hear the praises of thy sons, And bless each one and take him for thy own. Thy kind and watchful heart, through all the years Has lent the aid of heaven to our toil. We laid our cares and problems in thy hands, We tendered all our matters to thy care, And we have found thee generous and loyal. Christ's teachings on their tongues and in their pens, Christ's holiness about their sainted heads. We pray thee, Ambrose, to hold fast our hand, That time may never see the two unwed. And as thy trees, the Oaks, have towered high From tiny acorns planted long ago, So, with thy Masters and thy own good grace Shall this college cultivate and grow. -From OAKS 1940, Volume XII mediate experience either on our part or that of any predecessors, there were inevitably many imperfections in the final product. I suppose our sole accomplishment was that we did get it out on time, that is, before the school year ended." Pearl Harbor made the publishing of Volume XIII an exercise in perseverance. Mr. Robert Taylor recalled their experiences for us. "Joe LaCesa, as Editor-in-chief and Business Manager, was put in a very difficult position. The war was upper most in the minds of everyone. The publisher was in Iowa City and Joe had to make several trips a week to check on it. Transportation was not as good then as it is now and it really kept Joe on the go almost continuously, and he received little co-operation, the bulk of the entire work fell on his shoulders. He did not complain but kept on the ball and turned out a fine book." Mr. LaCesa was killed in the Pacific theater of the war. Seven years later with W.W.II Mr. J. J. Ryan over the G.I.s were back in college. Ambrosians again decided to have a yearbook. Mr. J. J. Ryan, Rock Falls, wrote: "I was very happy to have had a part in bringing back the OAKS 11
