Title

1964 Yearbook

Description

during my senior year, after a period of time when S.A.C. did not have a yearbook. Many times since graduation I have pulled out my '48 OAKS and enjoyed going through it. I well remember all the problems connected with compiling such a publication. The meetings for planning, coordination and teamwork involved, selling of advertising, scheduling photo appointments and many other activities were excellent training for any job in business today. I found it an excellent workshop for putting in practice what I had learned in the classroom." Mr. William Sueppel of Iowa City concisely summarized the value of yearbook work both to S.A.C. and to the individuals who participate in it: "My appreciation of the OAKS increases each year as I use it time and again to recall a name or a face of a college classmate or teacher. To St. Ambrose College and the Alumni Association, the OAKS is invaluable as a reminder of the events of one school year and of the students who gave life to those events. To the staff, the challenge of organizing and presenting a yearbook that will continue to be vibrant and meaningful in future years, is an excellent preparation for meeting the challenges that arise in our careers. Working on the 1950 book was the culmination of many fondly remembered experiences at St. Ambrose." Mr. William Sueppel From New Orleans Father Timothy Gibbons, O.P., of the 1951 staff, adds: "THE OAKS from my days at Ambrose becomes more valuable each year; I often use them to refresh my memory on names appearing in the ALUMNI NEWS. I have also found that my work on the OAKS staff has been profitable to me as a college teacher, particularly in understanding student aspirations and complaints." Mr. Joseph O'Grady of Grand Rapids edited the 1952 book. He emphasizes values the staff members receive. Mr. Joseph O'Grady "I suppose, quite simply, a school just isn't a school without a yearbook. I've still got mine and, believe me, it becomes more valuable with each passing year ... "a family album" if you will. Yearbooks create a sense of history, a feeling of tradition that individualizes the school over the years. Probably the single most important thing I learned during my editorship was the importance of delegated authority . . . as assistant art director with the Instrument Division of Lear Liegler, Inc., I frequently have cause to call on my "organizing" experience on THE OAKS." Rev. Timothy Gibbons, O.P. Mr. Kevin M. Kelleghan, editor of the 1954 OAKS and now of Mexico City tells of personal advancement directly related to this experience: "Personally, the value of work on the yearbook can be best demonstrated by my experience at a job interview. Three months after I graduated I applied for a position as copywriter with Sears, Roebuck & Co. A good part of my success in attaining that enviable position was due to the favorable impression made on the chief copywriter by the yearbook and my connection with it." 12
