Description
Mr. Martin E. Casey Mr. Martin E. Casey, Bethesda, Maryland (1921) wrote as follows: "I was particularly concerned for two years (of yearbook work) with the development of an alumni directory and the section which featured prominent alumni . . . When I returned to the campus nearly thirty years later as Assistant to the President, I picked up where I had left off in 1920 and proceeded, as Alumni Executive Secretary, to establish the present alumni organization and set up the Living Endowment Fund. My years on the yearbook staff proved most helpful in that endeavor. My experiences were also applied to the publication of ten high school yearbooks. In 1928, Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. B. Reidy while a public school superintendent, I was instrumental in starting the publication of these books and also served as faculty moderator. In my present position as Chief Economist of the Maryland State Planning Department, I am responsible for the writing, editing and printing of the monthly "Newsletter" which is also compiled and bound as an annual publication of the agency. I still rely on much that I learned from my staff experience at St. Ambrose. Consequently, it can be stated that for at least two decades I have utilized the learning of so long ago to good advantage. Our efforts of almost half a century ago may appear amateurish to present sophisticated college students, but your own will look just as dated a half century hence. The important thing is that you performed a service and grew with the experience." Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. B. Reidy, Peoria, tells us that, "St. Ambrose College that year (1922) had a small college enrollment, yet, those of us associated with the task of putting out the Yearbook felt we had produced a gem. However, we did not realize that on the Thirtieth Anniversary it would be deemed a pearl." Another member of the 1922 staff was Father Thomas J. Lew of Washington, Iowa. He evaluates ". . . the experience gained is almost as valuable as a course in Commerce. It has meant much Rev. Thomas J. Lew to me since I have become a pastor." Volume XI was to be the last until 1940. Father G. A. Lillis of Tipton explains the lapse. "I believe that the real reason that the 1923 issue of the annual was the last until 1940 was that it went so far into the red that the college authorities could not defend further publication. That annual involved a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun, too. I'm not sure that the product then would impress anyone now as giving extra value; but we had a woefully limited sales in those days in our several number of students, and so any extra expense was translated immediately into a deficit."
