Bob Durnin is about to be hauled down
by a couple Quincy tacklers just short
of the goalline.
St. Ambrose homecoming fans found
the Bees at their season's best in the annual event, with a 26 to 12 verdict resulting for the Davenporters over Lewis of Lockport, 111. — the defending Midlands conference champ and one of the
two teams to down the Bees during the
previous season.
St. Ambrose scored twice in the second
period, with 1-yard smashes by Mitchell Ware and Dick Ocar capping drives of
46 and 58-yards respectively. The first
Ambrose TD was followed by a 100-yard
runback of the subsequent kickoff by
Lewis' Ken Hanisch.
Lewis tied the count at 12-12 immediately after the intermission, but St. Ambrose exerted its authority with a pair of
quick tallies, also during the third period.
Ware, on a 28-yard dash off left guard,
completed a 95-yard push by the Bees
which had opened seconds before with a
52-yard pass from Bob Durnin to Dick Les. Durnin crashed over from the one
with the final touchdown.
