Loras, aided by the strong right
arm of quarterback Bob Bertsch
and a last-minute defensive switch
necessitated in the St. Ambrose
college machinery, posted its most
convincing triumph over the Bees
in the history of the long rivalry
with a 34-6 win.
Bertsch was all Loras needed.
The pin-pointing senior pitched
three scoring passes good for a
total of 125 yards to account for
all but two of the Loras touchdowns. St. Ambrose scored first
when Bob Durnin connected on
a 17-yard aerial to halfback Eddie Kline in the opening minutes of
the initial period.
The Duhawks were held scoreless during that first frame, but
that was before Bertsch warmed
up. He gave Loras a 13-6 lead at
halftime with TD heaves of 20
and 52 yards in the second quarter.
Part of Bertsch's success can be
attributed to the fact that regular
defensive halfback Jim Dorsey
wasn't in uniform for the Am-
brosians due to the death of his
father. Coach Frank Brogger
was forced to switch regular linebacker Mitchell Ware to Dorsey's
vacated post despite the former's
inexperience there. The move
threw the usually tough Ambrose
defense off stride.
Little Eddie Kline squirms out
of the reach of two Loras defenders to pick up a couple
valuable yards.
Tom Donohue snags an Ambrose pass in the
Panhandle game.
