St. Ambrose college snapped a 3-game
losing streak at Davenport's Municipal
stadium when Panhandle A. & M. College
of Goodwell, Okla., fell victim in a 14-13
thriller. One of the smallest crowds ever
to witness an Ambrose grid outing was
on hand for the Saturday match.
Panhandle waited until the final period
to do something about a 7-0 deficit the
Bees engineered in the opening couple
minutes, but the visitors gave St. Ambrose
the opportunity for a last laugh by failing
on the conversion attempt following their
second TD of the quarter.
That was all the Bees needed. St.
Ambrose, following the final Panhandle
score which was registered with 5 :40
left, opened a determined march which
stretched all the way from the Ambrose 27
to the Panhandle goal. The Bees covered
that distance in nine plays, with a 16-yard
jaunt by Al Gensheimer and a 31-yard
pass play from Bob Durnin to Dick Les
highlighting the drive. Gensheimer scored
from the one with 2:15 remaining, and
Dean Brady booted the winning point
after.
St. Ambrose obtained its initial 6-
pointer with a minute and 45 seconds
gone in the opening quarter. End Jim
Hanrahan blocked a punt by Panhandle's
Bub Rosenbaum near the Panhandle goal
and then gained possession long enough
in the end zone for the TD. Brady booted
the extra point.
Little Eddie Kline hugs the ball like his "best gal" as
he starts on a 14 yd. advance in the Panhandle contest.
