A fine St. Norbert college grid squad, on its way to the Midlands
conference championship, was nearly derailed by St. Ambrose at
Davenport's Municipal stadium. A fumble by the Bees on their
own 12-yard line led to the game's sole touchdown and a 7-0
verdict for the visiting Knights.
The anticipated defensive battle between the loop's best pair of
teams in that department developed on schedule as the two rivals
took turns overcoming respective scoring threats.
St. Norbert penetrated as far as the Ambrose two midway in the
second period, but the Knights were pushed back to the 5-yard
stripe where they were forced to relinquish the ball. St. Ambrose
uncorked two subsequent drives which reached the Norbert 16
and 17-yard lines in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
George Macek gave St. Norbert its necessary margin in the third
quarter when he hit pay-dirt from the Ambrose three with 15 seconds remaining. Seconds previous, Tom Donohue fumbled in the
Ambrose backfield and the ball was recovered on the 12 by Norbert
guard Joe Gerondale. A pass advanced the ball to the three.
Emmett "Ox" Waier, and Jim Murphy "hit 'em high" while Mitch Ware is "hitting 'em low.'
