QUINCY 26, ST. AMBROSE 19
St. Ambrose college couldn't stand prosperity in their home opener of the 1952 grid season,
bowing to Quincy college, 26 to 19, after a fast start that resulted in a 19-13 lead at half time.
In a game marred by penalties which totaled 265 yards by the time action ended, the Bees
looked like a lead pipe cinch to nail down their third triumph of the year when they pushed
over a pair of easy markers in the initial quarter.
On the Bees' third play from scrimmage fullback Mitchell Ware cracked through center for
a 32-yard dash to pay-dirt, with Dean Brady adding the point after. But Quincy immediately
bounded to a 7-6 deficit by advancing to the Ambrose one on three pass plays and then scoring
from there.
The Bees marched 97 yards for their second TD before the period ended, and the teams
traded counters in the second frame with Ambrose scoring on a 65-yard pass from Tom Donohue to halfback Eddie Kline. A fumble and pass interception in the final half led to the deciding
pair of markers by Quincy. St. Ambrose outgained Quincy on the ground, 217 yards to 52 yards,
and through the air, 194 yards to 138 yards.
Bob Durnin is about to be stopped after a five-yard gain.
