St. Paul, Minn. — St. Ambrose college, paced by
fullback Mitchell Ware, bounced back from its dis-
asterous opener a week previous to shade St. Thomas,
20 to 6, in a game played in a constant drizzle.
The game featured a brutal defensive battle in the
opening quarter. Play was limited to the area between
the 30-yard stripes without exception, as the two Catholic forces netted a combined total of seven yards by
rushing. Nine punts sailed into the air in that opening
period alone.
But Ware, who eventually ended as the Bees' top
ground-gainer during the season, broke the ice with a
4-yard plunge in the next quarter following the recovery of a St. Thomas fumble by guard Larry Zitkus.
St. Ambrose penetrated to the Tommies' three later
in the same stanza aided by Dick Ocar's 66-yard sprint,
but the Bees fumbled and moments later satisfied
themselves with a safety as Emmet Waier blocked a
Tommy punt.
While St. Thomas was countering in the third quarter on a pass-interception, the Bees were bagging the
triumph on TD's by Dick Les and Ware. Les took a
19-yard pass from quarterback Tom Donohue. Ware's
counter came on a 66-yard sprint.
