Organizations
LEARNING and expression are inseparable in a truly wise
man." Although this statement is anonymous, yet the faculty and students of St. Ambrose College accept it as an
evident certainty. We learn from books and other sources,
but these make up only the theoretical side of education.
The practical side of education demands the power of expression. Every great question has two sides, otherwise it cannot be a question. Often we are prone to view but one side of many questions and make
hasty decisions. In our literary organizations we become acquainted with
both sides of all issues presented. To present and discuss topics properly
is the primary purpose of all literary societies. Surely their value cannot
be overestimated.
This year the collegiate department separated into two divisions: The
Manning Club and the Delphian Society. These major societies endeavor
to take the initiative in the discussion of vital public questions and often
vie with one another on disputable grounds.
The minor societies devote considerable time to fundamental work in
the art of elocution. Some endeavor is also made to acquaint the students
with important current topics and develop a fair criticism and appreciation
of the more vital issues of the times.
