Autumn
Dancing on the pumpkin yellow and the apples gold and mellow
Autumn moonbeams gild the orchards and the fields of ripened grain.
Golden-rods and purple asters bloom unknown in forest cloisters
Where a brooklet breaks the silence with its rippling soft refrain.
High the harvest moon is riding, and among the clouds goes gliding
Painting gold both hill and valley and the giant forest trees.
Now the days of all fulfillment are at hand and all enjoyment
Of the labors of past summer are borne with the autumn breeze.
Songs of birds as southward going come from trees and bushes glowing
With the leaves of brown and yellow and the rubies blood-red hue.
'Tis the time for quicker action not for dreams and meditation,
For the cold and dreary winter every autumn must ensue.
