Telegram from General Samuel R. Curtis to Abraham Lincoln reporting he has not heard of "Negro trouble" but that his forces are responding to a Confederate raid on Springfield, Missouri. January 11, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect days earlier, prompting concerning about the response of proslavery whites in Missouri and Arkansas who were within Curtis' jurisdiction. An unsuccessful Confederate raid occurred in southwestern Missouri January 11-13, 1863. Autograph Letter Signed.
