Description

"Cease not, good Book," I cried, "to tell me more.
Who is it owns that great department store,
Well stocked with gym shoes, cracker-jack, and bolts?'
"0 he," it said, "is your old friend Simon Holtz,
Who still pursues the work he did with glee
When he was merchant back at S. A. C.
With ponies Bob had gained experience wide;
He looked upon that feat with no small pride.
He wore his heavy hair in pompous pomp;
With snorting bronchoes he did rough and romp;
Nor would he take a dare, but flamed with fire
When once had been aroused his wrathful ire.
To Dick school life had always been a cheer,
Though he had held a private room in fear.
I saw him bending o'er a dental chair;
I recognized him by his pleasant air,
Though in this chair there sat a man uncouth
From whom brave Dick was pulling out a tooth.
A frantic team came dashing down a street
With Ray Kinnavey perched upon the seat.
His beard was long, his clothes were worn and old;
Work and trials in him their story told.
He was a tiller of the fertile soil,
Who made his living by his honest toil.
Another page of life I slowly turned,
And there another future sadly learned.
"Ye gods!" I cried, "0 tell me not 'tis truth
That such deception lives in this sweet youth!
Not Adolph, who we thought would be a pastor,
Deceives us thus and turns out dancing master!"
I last saw one whose mission was to teach,
To reconcile the wayward and to preach.
The Baptist Church had claimed him for her own—
This pious man whom we had known as Cone.
He touched the hearts of both the old and young,
So sweet the words that fell from off his tongue.
Gladly would I have scanned my future then;
For I knew the chance would ne'er return again.
But ah, the vision faded 'fore my eyes
As Father Time awoke with threatening cries.
0 let me see my future," I exhorted.
"Such poets have no future," he retorted.
