Description

There's where the track work reached its supreme test.
How oft it saved these Knights of Idle Rest!
Louis Rohret, a movie actor famed,
At the highest pedestal of honor aimed.
He played the title roles with grace and ease;
No audience there was he could not please.
And yet, withal, he led a Christian life,
Devotedly attached to home and wife.
My eyes were turned toward a western clime—
There where once I'd spent a pleasant time.
Miller and Miller, two men of stature stout,
With broad-brimmed hats and spurs of steel, came out.
And there, with eyes as keen as any bird's,
With pride o'erlooked their lands and grazing herds.
As Father Time slept on with rumbling snore,
I traced my steps into a jewelry store.
Diamonds and gems, of all descriptions rare,
Seemed so many stars aglowing there.
Behind the counter, Meersman, King and Schmidt,
With winks and smiles, were making quite a hit.
That no one loves a fat man is not true,
For Arthur Tobin in the boys' love grew
Till in maturer years he'd come to be
Master of Discipline at S. A. C.
Alas! for the youth who of the rule made breach,
For Art, though fat, still had a copious reach.
Among the men politically inclined,
Was August Soer. Most sumptuously he dined
Each day. He was a politician prime,
In theories lofty, far beyond his time;
But one sad fault in him could be detected,
He did not know the way to get elected.
My vision brought before me Harper town,
A little hamlet of no great renown.
I looked about the place in anxious quest,
Until upon a sign my eyes did rest,
"Vogel and Leonard, Beauty Parlor," it read-
I left the town in silent fear and dread.
At school John Gerwe's voice had been a treat;
He used to sing light love songs low and sweet.
When I beheld him in the book of time,
How different then than in his days of prime!
Whoever thought his genius he'd engage
To thrill the vulgar rabble on the stage ?
