Time: Last March.

ACT O.
Nig (entering with telegram):
"Say, is there anyone here by the
name of J. Spivens; if so, let him step
forward and prepare for a trying misfortune."
Johnie: "Here I is. My name is
Spivens and I be prepared for any
shock you may be able to inject into
me, after eating that supper we had
tonight. It can'f be that the Adair
bank has went to the wall, can it?
Or that the town hall has burned
down? Oh, there is no use of me
trying to guess."
Nig: "I have here a message from
your folks saying that your brother
Bill "
Johnie: "Oh, don't say it I just
know he has been cuttin' up and has
been put in the county jail, or has
been in a runaway and been killed.
Pray do not keep me in suspense.
Out with it. If it be sad, I be prepared to shed tears; but, if it be a
pleasing accident, I be ready to
laugh."
Nig: "If you will hold down your
anxiety, I will proceed to read the remaining part of the message."
Johnie: "Hurry, please do."
Nig: "Here is the rest of it then.
Now prepare thyself. I guess I might
as well begin at the beginning. 'Your
brother Bill has an awful ' "
Johnie: "Oh, wait a minute; I am
not quite ready for the rest. Wait
and I will go with you up to the
President's office, and I will not be so
nervous there."
Nig: "No, no, no; that won't do.
It is my duty to read all messages,
whether they be said or pleasing
news."
Johnie: "But, sir (draws laugh
from "aggies"), have you not got a
heart in you? Can you not make an
exception here in this case for once?"
Nig: "My dear son, as much as it
hurts me sometimes, to perform my
duty, I do it. You will find, as you
go through life, that one has a certain duty to live up to, no matter
whether he be like you or 'simps' like
the rest of your hall."
Johnie: "But as you may know or
do so now, this is my first time away
from home, and the mere thought of
some of the folks brings tears to my
eyes. And I beg of you for the second time to make an exception here,
in my case."
Nig: "Nonsense, my boy, listen
and it will be all over in a second.
And cut out all that touching stuff
about home and the folks."
Johnie:
know best."
All right) I think you
Nig: "Am I going to be able to
finish this time without you butting
in on me?"
Johnie:
Yes."
Nig: " 'Your brother Bill has an
awful hard time selling your cow.
But she brought you a good price.
Am sending money. You would do
well to stop going to them moving
pictures shows. Pa says ' "
(Prefect breaks in on the scene.)
Prefect: "Get out of here, Nig,
and report." (Everyone is laughing,
and especially Spivens.) (Quick curtain, Bro. Jew.)
