Description

Tennis
Three lettermen returned to the St. Ambrose Tennis team this spring. These, plus three outstanding newcomers
made this year's squad comparable to the great teams produced by Father Hratz in his 12 seasons as Ambrose mentor.

The three monogram winners included: Captain Joe Pat Breen, Nashville, Tennessee; Jim Schwitters, Dixon,
Illinois and Dave Wagner, Iowa City, Iowa. In singles competition in the 1957 season, Breen was undefeated. These
men, along with absent Don Hayman, Jack Moran and Jim Murphy, compiled an outstanding 7-2 season record.

A big blow to the net squad came when Dan Rump, Burlington, Iowa, was killed in an auto accident last Novem-
ber. "Rump showed a good deal of promise not only in tennis, but also in basketball," said Father Hratz.

As has always been Father Hratz's practice, the '58 schedule again looms awesome for a school the size of Ambrose.
Such tennis notables as Bradley, Marquette, and Western Illinois provide truly rugged competition. This is not new
to Ambrose netmen as years passed found such teams as Wisconsin, Iowa and Iowa State on the schedule. During these
years, the charges of Fr. Hratz won the Iowa Conference championship five years running and also took the Midlands
crown in 1948 and 1949.
To date, the tennis squad has been one of the most successful spring sports at St. Ambrose and well deserves the
student body's avid support. Hat's off to Father Hratz and the St. Ambrose Tennis team!
