THE RENSSELAER REPUBLICAN
A St. Ambrose pass interception
midway in the fourth quarter led
to their third touchdown which assured them of a 20-12 win over the
St. Joseph's College Pumas yesterday afternoon. The score duplicated
last year's Bee win over the Pumas, who have yet to subdue the
Ambrosians.
The Bees drove for their first
score early in the game when they
took a Puma punt on their own 20
and marched the distance in six
plays. Tom Greenan, 145-pound Bee
back, scored from the 4-yard line.
Taking the kick-off, the Pumas,
with quarterback Tom Paonessa doing most of the ball carrying, went
the distance in 16 plays. Paonessa
sneaked over from the 1.
The Bees then took Frawley's
kick-off and also went the distance,
in 14 plays, Fullback Dick Zielinski
driving over from the 1. It looked
as if the Pumas might hold the
Bees back at this point; Ambrose
had first down and goal to go, and
in three plays were still trying to
score before Zielinski turned the
trick.
Early in the third quarter St. Joe
took a punt on their own 26 and
scored in seven plays. Halfback
Ernie Bidwell's 45-yard run highlighted this drive.
Held scoreless in the third and
most of the fourth quarter with the
score 14-12, and with the Pumas on
the march after recovering an Ambrose fumble, Bee Back Dick Les

intercepted a Paonessa pass on his
own 22 and ran it back to his 45.
Sparked by a down-the-center pass
to End Dick Forbes good for 27
yards to the Puma 4, Zielinski
dived over for his second score of
the day.
Statistically, the game was about
even with both teams making 11
first downs. Ambrose gained a total
of 278 yards to the Pumas' 231.
The Pumas completed six of 15
passes for 95 yards, while the Bees
connected on but three of 13 for
77 yards.
After a week off, the Pumas wrill
wind up the home card Saturday
Nov. 4, with the Homecoming tilt
against Ball State. Two road games
remain: Canterbury, Nov. 11, and
Lewis, Nov. 18.
