The St. Ambrose college football machine ground out another
victory at Davenport Municipal
stadium Sunday afternoon, but a
determined fourth quarter rally
by the Bees was needed to subdue a fighting eleven from Quincy
college by a 26 to 13 margin.
Trailing 13-12 in the fourth
period, the Bees pulled two touchdowns and the ball game out of
the proverbial hat after end Dick
Les recovered a crucial Hawk
fumble in the Ambrose end zone
to put a stopper on an 80-yard
goal ward march by the visitors.
The win was the 10th of the
season for St. Ambrose in eleven tries, while Quincy now has
won three, lost two, and tied
one.
The Hawks provided an indi
cation of things to come in the
opening minutes of the initial
quarter of play when they received the opening kickoff on
their own 20-yard line and
promptly drove the remaining
distance to the Ambrose goal.
Halfback Bill Richerson hit pay
dirt from the five, but Lou Costa's
attempt for the conversion was
blocked.
'This Hawk march was boosted
in its beginning by a pass from
quarterback Rudy Biller to end
Al DiCenso for a 28-yard gain to
tfe Ambrose 47. Biller's wing
Was in the hosts' hair throughout
t£e entire afternoon as he bombarded the Ambrose defenses
with a total of 30 tosses good for
211 yards.
After an exchange of short
punts at mid-field, the Bees finally caught fire. Sparked by the
passing of Don Berg and the running of Paul Gebhardt and Tom
Greenan, the hosts scored when
the latter cracked over from the
Quincy five. Tim Madden missed
the attempted extra point, but the
Bees began another drive a short
time later when Dom Rauzi recovered a Quincy fumble seconds
before the end of the first frame.
With 12 minutes remaining in
the half, the Bees scored their
second touchdown after Greenan
and Pat Carroll, the flashy sophomore who had been out of action
since Oct. 7, advanced the ball to
the goal line from the Ambrose
36-yard marker. Greenan again
carried over, but the conversion by
Madden was again no-good.
The Hawks came back with another tally, however, as Biller
set up the score with a screen
pass to Don Kuffle which netted
51 yards, and then hit DiCenso in
the end zone as the gun went off
ending the first half. This time
Rich JShanahan bulled over for
the extra point which gave the
visitors their 13 to 12 lead.
The Bees threatened three
times in the third period, but a
fumble by Carroll on the
Quincy seven, a pass interception by Richerson in the end
cone, and another fumble in the
same end zone nullified the
scoring.
Quincy then began the 80-yard
drive which ended with their own
fumble in the Ambrose end zone.
This was the turning point of the
ball game, as the Bees marched
from their 20 to the Quincy goal
line in just seven plays. Norb
Schulz and Greenan led the action as the latter again pushed
over, this time from seven yards
out.
The hosts added the clincher
two minutes and 15 seconds later
when center Bruno Mikrut intercepted a Biller pass on the St.
Ambrose 30 and returned it to the
Quincy 38. On the first play from
scrimmage Greenan shot an aerial
to Dick Forbes for the entire distance and the TD.
