American Chemical Society
The Saint Ambrose College Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society is the
most active club on campus. During the school year the club takes field trips through industries located
in the vicinity of the college. The Chapter invites guest speakers to discuss various fields of chemistry,
obtains movies for use in general chemistry, and participates in college activities.
Field trips were taken this year to Peoria, where they toured the plants of the Caterpillar Tractor Com-
pany and the Commercial Solvents Corporation; to Clinton, to visit the Clinton Foods, Inc. and Dupont
Cellophene plants; and to Grinnell, Monmouth, and Rock Island.
Guest speakers were obtained from the Shell Oil Company, Swift and Company, the Rock Island Arsenal,
the State University of Iowa, and Iowa State College. Participation in the Inter-Club Council was fostered
and movies were shown on various aspects of chemistry to all interested students.
Education is mixed with pleasure. The Club sponsors picnics for its members throughout the school
year.
Fittingly, the climax of the year's activities was presented by the group at the Second Annual Saint
Ambrose College Undergraduate Symposium on May 5th. Dr. Shriner of the State University of Iowa
was the featured guest speaker, while representatives of sixteen high schools and colleges attended. This
meeting was given national recognition.
