The Drama Club was founded not to create another group of players, but to
help its members obtain more enjoyment out of theatre as an art form. A critical
taste and the how and the why of theatre art was to be cultivated by group and
individual effort. These efforts are given recognition by a system of awards.
At weekly meetings, members or guest speakers offer varied programs designed
to entertain and inform. J. Donovan Byrnes, first president of the club, gave one
such talk on the fundamental principles of scenic design and construction. Models
of sets, one made by Wayne Loui of WOC-TV, and the other by Donovan Byrnes
for his own play Salome, and water color sketches illustrated the talks.
Since members of the club gain a working knowledge of theatrical fundamentals,
they are often awarded parts in college arena productions. Two such plays in which
members appeared were: the fantasy, Lucifer at Large, and the witty English comedy,
The Importance of Being Earnest.
