THE Ambrosian Basketeers, under the efficient direction of
Coach Frank Coonan, came through the great winter drive
with but few losses. In the earlier battles the quintet displayed great offensive and defensive skill, easily defeating
their opponents in the Wartburg, Lenox, Williams and Vashti,
and Turner struggles, and checking the enemy with extraordinary effort in the Iowa Wesleyan charge. Counter attacks were attempted
by the hostile forces at Aledo and Clinton, but the Ambrosians continued
their victorious march and all were confident of their ultimate success.
But Dubuque, the main objective of the drive, was a scene of lively preparation. The Ambrosians, failing to fight with the spirit and valor that so
characterized their earlier struggles, were vigorously repelled; and a few
days later, in a counter charge by the Dubuque forces, Coonan's quintet was
decisively defeated and compelled to retreat.
Captain Sheehan has promised that in his spring drive he will lead his
baseball regiment to Dubuque for a double victory over the enemy, who
will then be forced to abandon their trenches and line up on the open field.

St. Ambrose clearly outclassed their old rivals from Aledo in the first
game of the season. Williams and Vashti this year put up a style of game
much inferior to that usually exhibited by an Aledo team, and Simmons,
Coonan, Coryn and O'Connor dropped in baskets at will, while Volz, Sheehan, and Supan had easy work guarding their men.
At St. Ambrose, January 15. St. Ambrose 29; N. W. Turners 15.
Immediately after the close of the Christmas vacation the speedy Turner
five came over for a friendly battle but returned home considerably humiliated. The St. Ambrose team work showed up to great advantage in this
game.
