Description

Leo Deutsch

INTRA

The editors of the Oaks take this opportunity to thank Leo Deutsch for the fine work he
has done in organizing and promoting intramural athletics at St. Ambrose. They also wish
him the best of luck in his duties as head coach
at St. Benedicts. Leo will always be remembered at St. Ambrose not only for his work as a
coach, but also for the example he set in the
molding of the students' character.

The intramural basketball tournament got
under way in November with thirty-nine teams
being formed into five leagues. With the resignation of the I.M. director, Leo Deutsch, it was
decided that the basketball tournament would
end in an elimination contest. Eventually, the
field narrowed down to these five winners:
League 1, Globetrotters; League 2, Dirty Socks;
League 3, Gaels; League 4, Quad-City Rockets; League 5, Central Illinois Club. The
Gaels and the Dirty Socks met for the championship, with the Gaels winning, 33-32. Last
year the same teams met with the Dirty Socks
emerging the winner, 25-24. Dick Tappe of
the Gaels proved his worth by putting in three
consecutive baskets in the first two minutes of
play, and by hitting the hoop with a field goal
in the last ten seconds to put his team in the
winners' circle. Twelve teams fought for the
volleyball crown. Batting the ball around for
the championship were the Net Busters and a
group from the church department, the Globetrotters. Both teams had five wins and no defeats at the end of the regularly scheduled
season. In the deciding game, the Net Busters,
after a bad start, rallied to win the game and
the championship.
