was not, but six strong-armed freshmen were
on hand to promise followers that not too many
matches would be lost in the future.
It was one of the bigger complaints that
last year's team had too few experienced men.
And it was true that Starcevich had to call on
six freshmen for a large part of the Bees' mat
work. After an easy victory over Iowa Wesleyan 34-2, the price of early experience began
to run high as Omaha U. and Cornell college
sent the Ambrosians groaning 24-6 and 25-3.
By the end of the year the story had been
changed so that even if the youngsters were
being beaten the scores were a bit more respectable.
The six men who bear watching are: Ken
Reed, lohn Rueger, John Campbell, Jack Taffe,
Fred Mock and Don Paulsen. Reed, Rueger
and Campbell won titles at the Iowa Conference meet in their respective divisions of 121
lbs., 135 lbs. and 145 lbs.
The third bright spot in the wrestling picture was Art Michalik. The 225-pound behemoth ran his victory string to 28. In AAU sectional competition the big fellow came out as
division winner too. In addition to the Omaha
and Cornell defeats the Bees were outmatched
by Wartburg 16-12 and by Arkansas State 20-
15. Coach Starcevich watched his men close
out the season with a win over Bradley U.
17-11.
