1949-50 WRESTLING
Matt Starcevich, Coach
Wrestling, never an easy sport to sell, was
finding a popular place on the St. Ambrose
athletic calendar, at least as far as student interest was concerned. The record of 2-4 was
not the greatest argument for this success,
which seemed to come more in spite of misfortunes on the mat. But three factors were hidden
behind these showings and accounted for
wrestling's popular acceptance. These were:
Coach Matt Starcevich, six freshmen wrestlers
and Art Michalik.
Coach Starcevich had a double duty to fulfill when he started wrestling in its first experimental year in 1947. He had to win matches and
he had to interest the student body. Student
attendance at the matches indicated that part
of Starcevich's job was done. The other half

season, Thursday night, February 23rd, against Wartburg College. The wrestlers are:
Row One: Fred Rock, 175, Grand Mound, Iowa; Phil Kent, 128, Wilmette, 111.; and Charles
Logic, 165, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Row Two: lohn Campbell, 145, Davenport; John Rueger, 136, Davenport; Dick Colson, 155,
Davenport; John Gredell, 165, Keokuk, Iowa; and Matt Starcevich, coach.
Row Three: Bob Dineen, 165, Springfield, 111.; Art Michalik, heavyweight, Chicago; Don
Paulsen, heavyweight, Davenport; Bill Caffery, 155, Davenport; and John Grothus,
