"The Ideological Role of the University"
Dr. Richard Lichtman, Assistant professor of
Philosophy at the University of California,
Berkeley, spoke here November 29, 1967. Dr.
Lichtman earned his undergraduate degree from
the University of Pennsylvania and later received his M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale. He is a
staff member at the Center for the Study of
Democratic Institutions, Santa Barbara, Calif.
Before becoming a member of the faculty at
Berkeley, Dr. Lichtman taught at the University
of Kansas City for four years, and among his
more important works is Toward Community, a
criticism of modern capitalism. In this work he
directs his attack upon the failures of the social welfare system in our society. In his lecture Dr. Lichtman criticized the function of the
university in today's world. In stating that the
university should be a "seeker" after the truth",
Lichtman accused the universities of being "service centers with short-range goals" instead of
providing the independent leadership that is
necessary for intellectual growth.
Lois Pearson
"Focus on Latin America"
In March the campus community was
given an excellent insight into the ever-
increasing problem of Latin America
when Miss Lois Pearson of Newsweek
Magazine spoke here. Her deep knowledge of this crucial area is due to her
work in covering hemispheric affairs
since joining Newsweek in 1946. With
the exception of San Salvador this employ has taken her to every country in
the Western Hemisphere. Since September, 1961, Miss Pearson has been
associate editor of the Americas department. Among her achievements has
been the contribution of articles to
several encyclopedia yearbooks and
her frequent appearances as a television panelist on "Ladies of the Press".
Miss Pearson is also a member of the
Overseas Press Club and the League of
Women Voters. She received her A.B.
degree from Augustana College, Rock
Island, Illinois, after spending her Junior year at UCLA.
