SENIOR COMMERCIALS
Study Hall, Year of 1918-1919.
Dear Bertha:
Since I saw yer fur the last time I've been having the time of my life.
Talk about fun, well, I've just been dieing laffin at the tricks that I pull
over on some of these city guys. They think just cause they stay out later
nights than we do in Marlowe Junction that they's smarter—but you jest
leave it to yours truly to show 'em.
The other nite they'd thought I fell for one of their triefcs but I turned
the trick on them. They put mustard on my bananna sose I wouldn't eat
it but I got ornry and ate it all. The next day I didn't feel very good—I
guess it was homesickness I was.
I'm takin Senior Commercial and the fellows in my class are pretty
good scouts. One of them Georgie Bouquot is awful nice. Whenever yer
talk to him he jest smiles. I wonder if he would if they put mustard on
his food? He's awfully pretty, I jest wish you'd meet him.
Another one of them is Forrest Vass and he's what we called at the
Junction, cute. He used to comb his hair in the middle but we made jest
of it and he let his room mate have the blue print so now he has a pompadour and Monger, his room-mate, plays the part. I'm study in Shakespeare
and so I thought I'd make a pun. Ain't I learnin fast?
All the guys think I'm awful funny. They come and get me to sing
and tell stories *n everything. I tole 'em all about you and one of them,
Tommie Thompson, ask me to write for your pitcher. Send it to him, just
Davenport, Iowa, care of his papa and mamma. He's in my class too.
The smartest boy in my class is Wolfe but he ain't as fierce as his name
says he is. He uses powder on his face just like the actress that we saw
once. He also talks an awful lot. His home's in Lost Nation—I mean
that's the name of the town. There's so many Germans there, that they
call it the lost nation. No, I ain't kiddin.
There's a guy named Hoeppner in my class what's always tryin to kid
me but he's so sleepy that he couldn't kid a goat. He is late or absent
