Description

The Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary

THE Sodality was canonically erected and aggregated to the
First Primary Sodality of the Roman College under the title
of The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Philip
Neri, on December 8, 1915. Father Meinberg organized the
Sodality at the College and continues to be its Father
Director.
Every Catholic who boards at the College is eligible for membership in
the Sodality. There are two sections. The Foreign Mission Section is
devoted to the promoting of zeal and enthusiasm for the Missions. Periodicals and books devoted to the missionary cause may be obtained at the College Library. We are proud to claim as an alumnus, Rev. Bernard Meyers,
who was one of the missionary band that sei out from Maryknoll last September for the mission field in China. In a material way this section has
collected stamps and tin foil and given alms to the cause of the Missions.
The Eucharistic Section promotes devotion to the Most Holy Sacrament of
the Altar. Each member pledges himself to receive Holy Communion and
to spend a half hour in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament every week.
I The first reception of candidates this year was held on the feast of the
Immaculate Conception, at which time sixty-three new members were enrolled under the banner of Our Lady. Later on, when twenty more were
enrolled, every Catholic boarder was a Sodalist.
At the meeting held every Sunday evening, a hymn is sung, the Little
Office of the Blessed Virgin is recited, and a short talk is given by the Director. The subject of the weekly conferences during the present year was the
divinity of Christ and the foundation of the Catholic Church. At the beginning of the school-year it was suggested that the prayers of the Sodality
be offered for the return of men to the true Faith, for our soldiers at the
front, and for an early and victorious end of the war. So speedily and
completely was the last petition answered, that to thanksgiving the Sodality
has undertaken to build a shrine in honor of the Blessed Virgin. The
officers have secured subscriptions to the amount of about four hundred
dollars. It is hoped that the shrine, which is to be in the form of a.grotto,
will be ready to dedicate in May. It will remain here as a memorial of the
zeal and devotion of the Sodality of 1918-1919.
