I got a balloon today
and it liked me.
We went places together,
climbed hills and
crossed streams on rope bridges.
We saw many things my balloon and I.
I held very tightly to
my friend, and it seemed
to hold onto me —
never to let each other go.
When the day retired,
I started home, (mom always
said never to be late for supper)
And my balloon and I walked home
through the golden sunset
just like the cowboys used to do.
Then, through some unconscious
feeling
we let go of each other,
and I watched my light-hearted friend
fly for the sun.
We knew that what we felt for
each other was real,
but we made happiness with each other
for today and tomorrow he knew
he would be deflated and wrinkled, so
we parted knowing each other in our fullest.
