Description

Literary Societies.
IN encouraging and promoting a desire for intellectual discernment among the
students the following Literary Societies have proved a helpful factor: St.
Ambrose, St. Thomas and the Senior Debating Society.
The chief aim of the St. Ambrose Society, composed of the commercial and lower
English classes, is to furnish the members with the fundamental requirements for plain
English narration and inspire them with an eagerness to strive for a precise and accurate style in dissertation.
The more advanced classes comprise the St. Thomas Society, which is chiefly concerned with the higher and more elaborate forms of English narrative.
The members are given an opportunityof exercising their talent in the imaginative
and deliberative line. They treat chiefly of essays, brief original stories and declamations. The main object is to cultivate a taste for the more forcible and finer expressions of the English idiom, and, by enabling the members to declaim in public, to lessen
that self-consciousness so prevalent among young speakers.
Senior Debating Society.
IN order to give the Senior students an opportunity of perfecting themselves in
oratorical delivery, there has been recently organized in the institution a Senior
Debating Society, composed of students of college standing.
The members devote considerable time to debating the mooted questions of the
day—political, social, or industrial. Keen interest in the forensic and argumentative
style is shown, and it is evident that great results will be forthcoming from the new
organization.
The literary societies meet every Sunday evening, and are presided over by the
respective censors, Fathers Hauber, Adrian and Cone.
