Description

The arrival of Reverend Father O'Neill at the
College, four years ago, gave a new impetus to
Athletics. Under his direction, Athletics have been
placed on a new basis, and have been
brought to a high degree of excellence. There are
signs of a still greater growth under his management. Through his persistent efforts and business
management, athletic finances have ceased to be a
serious problem. His earnestness and zeal for the
"Sports" have won the support of the Alumni and
the Student body. To him St. Ambrose is indebted
for its excellent schedules in Football, Baseball and
Basketball; for the inauguration of the practice of
giving an "A" as a mark of distinction to those who
participate in three games in any one of the leading sports, and for many other things, too numerous
to mention, which have made him the great patron
of fine "Sport" and won for him the deserved esteem
of the Boys, present and past. Through Father
O'Neill, St. Ambrose was admitted into the Minor College Conference of Iowa, which
makes possible a larger schedule with teams of superior class.
Father O'Neill insists on a high standard of Sportsmanship among players and
students, and he is, in all his dealings with them, an inspiration for manly, clean, clever
and thorough Sport.
"Port" seems to be a natural leader. Under his clever
direction, the Eleven brought forth their best efforts. This
makes his third year on the St. Ambrose Eleven. His regular
position is at half-back, but this year he also played quarter
part of the season, where he showed his natural adaptability
and exceptional skill for almost any position.
He is not very heavy, weighing but 140, but his speed
and intense fighting spirit have made him a formidable foe to
any opposing team. This "grit" and "pep" he always tried to
instill into the hearts of his fellow teammates, who placed their
utmost confidence and loyalty in him.
The students showed their approval of his good work by
giving him their heartiest applause and support in bringing out
a winning team. At the end of the season he was given nine
hearty cheers! This being his Senior year at the College, his
presence will be greatly missed by the 1913 squad.
Being an all-round athlete, the "A" men saw fit to elect
him Captain of the 1913 Baseball team, in which position he has
proven himself most satisfactory.
