Description

The next game was lost to St. Joseph's College, Dubuque. Both teams played fast
ball for nine innings, but an uneven break of hard luck lost the game for St. Ambrose.
The game would have at least run into extra innings, with a very strong probability
of St. Ambrose winning, had it not been for the freak maneuvers of the ball when it
hit an outfield wall and bounced out of sight. During the unsuccessful attempt to locate
it, St. Joseph's scored twice. We were determined to win the next game, but unfortunately St. Joseph's saw fit to cancel the return engagement.
On May 22nd we met the representatives of Augustana College of Rock Island on
our local diamond, and they were ours from the start. Fitz again hurled for St. Ambrose,
and blanked the strong nine from over the river, striking out fiften opponents. Only two
men saw the third sack. The support given Fitz was gilt-edge at every stage of the
contest, and the batting of the Ambrosians was sensational. The final score was 9 to 0.
Three days afterwards, the College nine journeyed to Dixon, Illinois,, and defeated
Dixon College for the second time. Cannon-ball Lew made his debut as a slab artist. He
succeeded in fanning out eleven men, as well as slamming out a double and a single.
The game was closely contested throughout, and in the first of the ninth inning, with
the score standing 2 to 1 against the Blue and White, they rallied, and Catcher Wadle,
by his timely hit, brought in three runs, and the final score was 4 to 2 in St.
Ambrose's favor.
The final game of the season was staged at Rock Island. It was a battle royal
throughout, and the Augustana Collegians were unable to score until the ninth inning,
when they tallied one run. The final score favored St. Ambrose by the count of 2 to 1.
It was a pitchers' battle, honors for hits and strike-outs being equally divided, but the
St. Ambrose support was errorless, whilstAugustana had six charged against them.
Besides striking out thirteen men, Fitzpatrick secured two hits and scored a run. This
game ended one of the most successful seasons in baseball St. Ambrose has ever had.
We secured a total of fifty scores to our opponents' thirty-five. We held the reputation
of being one of the fastest minor college teams of Iowa.
With seven of the "A" men back for the 1913 season and the college having joined
the Hawkeye College Conference, the students feel confident that the brand of baseball,
which this season's artists will furnish the college fans, will be in no way inferior to
the team of 1912. LAWLOR—'13.
