THE whole City of Davenport was startled when, in the Fall of '09, a band of
boys, brainy and brawny, entered S. A. C. They began at once to establish
themselves as the Academic '13's and were dubbed Freshmen. Numerous were the
feats performed during the first year of their career. Not only in their studies,
but in their sports as well, did these "Freshies" show marvelous ability, winning for
themselves no little glory.
Although only twenty-five of the thirty-three "Freshies" returned to pursue their
studies, the Sophomore year was even more successful than the preceding one. Six of
their number made the Academic Football team, Lynch, Cain, Duffy, Kennedy, Evans
and D. Klise. Owen Duffy was one of the mainstays of the College Baseketball five.
The Irish History prize was also added to the list of trophies by John Gallagher.
In 1911 and 1912, the '13's continued to add to their victories and sent five men
to the College Football team. The basketball team was indebted to the Juniors for
their center. This year the wearers of the Purple and Gray came into their own with
the best class baseball team in the history of the class. Only the Seniors with the
college infield could stop us. June 4 is a day long to be remembered. John Fitzpatrick was at his best, and, although we outhit our older opponents, we were outpointed
in a seven-inning struggle, 4 to 6, and forced to give up our claim to the title of class
champions. William Buster Schmidt won the Christian Doctrine prize in Father Heller's
class, and John Gallagher again too\ the Irish History prize.
In the Fall of '12, the fastest football team that ever represented the Blue and
White owed much of its success to the Senior Ac's, who had four men on the regular
team. Two substitutes and three of the regular basketball men were '13's.
In the annual election David Klise was chosen Alumni Editor; Raymond Crowley
and Leonard Evans appointed Assistant Business Managers; Marvin Herrington, Art
Editor.
When the enemy is near our war-cry is: Rickety, Rackety—Zip, Boom-Bah, Class
of '13—Rah! Rah! Rah! Whoop-snacks! Whoop-snacks! Who are We? Academics, '13,
S. A. C. We're the Class that Can't be Beat; Always Ahead in Every Heat; Ahead of
Them All, Yes, Sir-ee; Class of '13, S. A. C. L. A. BAXTER—A. '13.
