Description

Preface.
ONE MORNING, over on the hill, while a crowd of the Senior Class were discussing
subjects of varied interest, the subject of an Annual was broached. The discussion soon advanced to the practicability of editing an Annual for 1913. About
that time the bell rang and according to our custom we promptly dispersed.
For several weeks little was said of the venture, but the idea lingered in our minds.
Ere long the little seed cast by chance on that historic spot took root and grew. The
fruit—such as it is—has fallen on these pages which we here offer to the patrons and
Alumni of St. Ambrose College.
Perhaps youth in its enthusiasm and eagerness set for itself a task beyond its powers.
Inexperienced as we are in the fields of printed literature, we realize the difficulty
of our self-imposed task. Still the fond desire of seeing the deeds and the progress
of our Alma Mater proclaimed to the world urged us to the work.
First attempts usually fall far short of expectation, and we realize that only a little
will be accomplished of what we should have liked to do. We ask therefore that you
regard our good will rather than the quality of our literary efforts. We wTould gladly
have done more.
It is our cherished hope that from these humble beginnings succeeding classes will
advance, profit by our faults and enlarge on our efforts until the S. A. C. Annual
will have reached a standard that will do justice to our Alma Mater.
With little pretention, with no conceit, fully conscious of our many shortcomings,
we, the editorial staff, send forth our first Annual on its mission of good will and
good cheer.
We are optimistic, perhaps visionary; but we see in this Annual the first stage in
the formation of those ties that will unite the old boys and the new in an organization which will find expression not only in an Annual but even more socially in
yearly meetings. Our most cherished hope is that the near future will see an Alumni
Association assembled in honor of our Alma Mater.
We wish to express grateful acknowledgement for the aid rendered by the Alumni
in meeting the expenses incident to the publication of the Annual. We assure those who
have so generously assisted us that their names will be kept in benediction by the class
of '13.
We are likewise indebted to the business firms of the city whose advertisements
appear on these pages. We pledge them our patronage and good will. The kind treatment we have received at their hands will be among the very grateful memories we
shall carry with us of the fair city of Davenport. PORTEL—'13.
