Davenport.
Mayor Claussen then addressed the assemblage, speaking in part as follows:
Fellow Citizens: The St. Ambrose College bids fair to become the third in the
galaxy of beneficial institutions which have come to our city and for which
we are indebted to our citizens of the Catholic faith.
St. Ambrose College will draw to our city a number of talented young men
from all parts of our state and from adjoining states. This will be their Alma Mater,
here will be the fountain where they will imbibe knowledge. From here they will depart, fitted to be teachers, advisers and counselors of their fellowmen.
It is the duty of our citizens to extend to them the right hand of fellowship, to
help, to assist, and to encourage them in all possible ways. May we then be not derelict in our duty. May we, as far as it is in our power, sustain the fair name of
the city of Davenport. May we accept the trust conferred upon us. Davenport bias
fair to become a great educational center. School is added to school, academy to
academy, college to college. We cannot have too many of these. Competition herein,
if it exists at all, assumes a most generous form. It may be a trivial, but nevertheless truthful, saying, that with these commodities the market can never be overstocked.
May the young men who will receive their education here always remember fondly
their stay in Davenport.
May the edifice to be reared from this cornerstone proudly extend its high spire
and for many a year to come stand as a firm and lasting monument of the grand principle of humanity which prompted its dedication. May the present day long be remembered by us, our children and children's children as the day when there was
commenced a good work, a work noble and true, the work of advancing the cause of
education; as a day when another step forward was made in the march of civilization.
St. Ambrose College—may it live, prosper and flourish and for centuries to come
exercise its beneficient influence in the great cause of education.—From the Catholic
