Description
Major Baseball League. WE CANNOT praise the baseball league too much, for the part that
it plays in the development of the raw material, prior to the
baseball season. It affords untried material a chance for development, which they would not have otherwise, and is the means,
many times, of a promising recruit winning a place on the Varsity. It also assists in bringing out men, who would not try for
a place on the Varsity, and in this way is a most beneficial asset of the spring training season. The League this year did not play out its entire
schedule and hence was not as profitable as it might have been but nevertheless, it brought about very much good.
The material was divided into four teams, and the following men were selected to act as captain on their respective team, W. Kleffman, W. Schmidt, F.
Simons and J. Cash. The teams were very evenly divided and it proved very interesting as far as it went. The first game was played on April 4th and was won
by Kleffman. It was a good game but the victors outhit Simons' team and played
a much better fielding game. They did not remain in the lead very long, however, as Schmidt's was a much more balanced team and from the very first game, pulled away from the others with a lead that they could not overcome. They were separated from their nearest contender by a good percentage when the League stopped playing. The last game was scheduled for the last day of May, but it closed with about tw weeks' scheduled games unplayed. It furnished the Varsity team with four players. Products of the League were outfielders F. Murphy, Schmidt, Laga-
marcino and Cunningham. "A" Men in Baseball for 1914.
Charles McGinnis, William Hynes,
Law. Murphy, Francis Lew, Thomas
Cunningham, Columbus Lagomarcino,
Francis Murphy and Ben. Walters.
