Description

The College Chapel Choir THE CHURCH has always taken great interest in the progress of
the different arts and has fostered them by admitting to the service of religion everything good and beautiful discovered by
genius in the course of ages. To promote the glory of God and
the edification of the faithful, music has always been employed
in connection with the Divine service. From time immemorial
man has, by natural religious instinct, honored God by means of
music. By the command of God Himself, under the Old Law, music held a very
elaborate role in the Divine service of the Temple. David beautified religious ceremonies by hymns and the use of musical instruments. "Speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your
hearts to the Lord"—St. Paul to the Ephesians. And on down through the course
of ages the significance of singing in connection with the worship of God has
never been lost sight of. Church music raises man above common-place everyday thoughts into an ideal and joyous mood and by turning his mind and heart to the sacred words and actions of the holy ceremonies, moves him to the proper devotional and festive spirit.
St. Ambrose is conspicuous for her solemn and elaborate observance of the
feasts, festivals and ceremonies established by the Church as a means of offering
noble and fitting worship to God. The College Chapel Choir accompanies at the
celebration of the ceremonies throughout the year. High Mass is chanted on Sundays and Holy days with the Vespers and Benediction in the afternoon—the Lenten and May Devotions and the other festivities are also observed. The Choir
always aiming at the highest possible standards has attracted favorable comment
of the most exacting critics. Besides the plain chant, some of the new Masses
rendered were Marzo's Mass in F, Foeppel's in B Flat, Wiegand's in E Flat and
Mass of The Immaculate Conception. The solo parts of the Masses were carried
by Messrs. Potter, Morrin and Burke.
